Eaton is the county seat of Preble County — home to the courthouse, county government, and roughly 8,300 residents, about 24 miles west of Dayton. Founded in 1806 and named for William Eaton, the town grew up at the junction of two turnpikes and has kept its crossroads feel ever since. Historic downtown Main Street, anchored by the Preble County Courthouse, is still the center of town.
Eaton families have plenty of room to get outdoors, too. Fort St. Clair, built in 1792 and now on the National Register of Historic Places, sits on the town’s western edge, and the city is home to Crystal Lake, Seven Mile Creek, Water Works Park, 7-Mile Park, and Clarence Hook Memorial Park.
